Yashica 124

[Home] [Up]

I bought a nice Yashica 124 that had seen better days. But was still in good working order all I did was make it more presentable and maybe light tight. I had this camera apart before I thought about taking the pictures. The top "View Finder" is fairly straight forward four screws and it's off.

This is just a brief explanation read AGFA  first

All these pictures are "Thumbs" click on them for a larger view.

With the view finder off and an inspection of the inside.
The inside has dust and bits of "Foam" and needs a good cleaning.
The back lens element, mirror and the inside can be cleaned with the finder off.
This is a common Problem in the Yashica the foam seal becomes old and dry rots. All the flakes fall into the top of the camera dirtying the view. All this is in the Viewing lens and does not effect the actual image. But who likes to look through the dirt.
Also an easy fix. I buy my "Light Baffle" from www.micro-tools.com a good source for other supplies. Thin foam with sticky on one side that you cut to size.

Before
After

No precision work here just cut to size and stick.

After I did the top I installed the foam all around the Back. Paying special attention to the area by the film spools.

The next thing I like to do is separate the Ground Glass and the frenzle Lens and give them a good cleaning.

On the bottom side of the View Finder are two retaining clips. Just push down and slide them past the stops.
Be careful when cleaning these are easily scratched. I run them under water and use hand soap to get the thick stuff off and then Windex for the finial cleaning.
Look at the position of these springs the are knocked out of place easily.

After looking at the mirror and trying to clean it while still installed I found it easier to just remove it.
By pushing down on this spring tab the mirror than is slide out. That's it next to the camera.

Again be careful when cleaning, the silver can separate from the glass.

Check and clean the Viewing lens
A through cleaning, new foam and the camera is ready to put back together.

I also cleaned the "Taking Lens" this is easily done through the back.
