1) 58 Buick

Found this car in a street in Gent nicely posed half in the shade! I thought it was 50s and a chum who has written a book on such things told me what it was. I hope he was right!

This Kodak Retinette 017 used to belong to my father who left it to me. It has sentimental value, is a bit battered but it does take sharp shots. Film was Foma 100 dunked in Tmax. Neg scanned with Epson 3170. Slightly cropped and USM only.

2) 50's theme "Grease"

The pix were taken on two Sundays in a row. The 17th of April, in very bright evening light for "Warehouse Rock", and the 24th, on an overcast day for "Grease". The places I stood for both were about 25 feet apart. The warehouses are being converted into condos, and I shot the huge poster of the two smug looking people through a huge, articulated, Volvo loader, which "needs grease to live".

M3 and 50 collapsible

3) 50's theme "Warehouse Rock"

Exakta VXIIa w. 5.8 cm. f2 Biotar. Got some nice pics from the Exakta, but in bright light the waist level finder was nearly unusable.

4) "50 Years"

This is Barb, one of my neighbors.  For 50 years she and John shared a life.  Fifty years of love and companionship, good times and bad, tender and rough.  Children came, grew, matured, with their guidance.  And they eventually left, only to return at intervals with children of their own.  Barb and John stayed together through it all...Then John left.  He had taken all he could take. He just left.  Barb still loves him, still wears the ring he gave her 50 years ago.  Now Barb keeps John in a box, on her dresser.  There is a pinch of mortal residue and 50 years of memories in that box.

6) "50 Feet from Sheep"

Near my home are lovely walks on the hills. This was taken during one such walk on a sunny evening.

Franka Rolfix. A camera given to me after having been thrown away by someone and then rescued. 120 film [Orwo 125] developed in FX50 and Rodinal, scanned in on Epson 3170. Slight crop, no USM.

7) "50 Flags with 50 Stars"

Zeiss Contaflex IV

8) "50 minutes without fish"

Taken in a walk near the beach in Malvin section of Montevideo's Rambla. It was a grey, stormy day, we'd having a lot of rain and these two 50 year older were trying to get a fish from the River Plate without much success.

. Ikoflex Ib with Novar 75/3.5, manufactured 1954-56 according to several Web sites. A failed competitor to the 'Cord, anyway a beautiful machine and a nice box. My first TLR ever, bought less than one month before this photo. Aperture about 11 or 16. FP4+ processed in Rodinal 1:50.

9) "America’s First Irish Coffee"

  1.
  2. I was wandering around the Marina in San Francisco around 8 AM on June 3 when I ran across the Buena Vista bar at the corner of Hyde and Beach.  On a plaque outside, it is noted that the first Irish Coffee in America was made here in 1952.  What could I do?  I went inside, ordered one up ($6 + tip), and got the shot!  By 9 AM, I was feeling rather happy!  I personally love the color in the background most.
  3. My Rolleiflex T (ReedG_RolleiflexT.jpg).
  4. This was taken with 120 Portra VC iso160, 6X6 format.  Handheld, 1/30 f3.5 I believe.  Processed and scanned professionally.

10)

A) Picture name:  50ers in the beach. File attached: JF120605.jpg

B) Information about the Picture. A group of people in their late 50s get together in the beach to play a game called Tejo with colored wood disks. I like to walk in Montevideo's beautiful Rambla and look around for photo opportunities.  I liked the way the trees frame the group in the distance. Taken in June 2005, date forgotten.

C) Picture of the Camera: see attached file JFCX05.JPG

D) Information about the camera and process. This Super Isolette was made in the mid fifties. It is my only folder camera. Solinar 75/3.5 lens.  Film is FP4+ processed in 1:1 Rodinal.

Montevideo, Uruguay

A) "50 Cents for the Newspaper"

GrandfatherAndGrandson.jpg

B) Fifty cents is the cost of the newspaper.

Capturing your two-year old and your father sharing a

newspaper is priceless.  This picture is acutally the

13th shot with a camera designed for 12 pictures on

120 film.

C) WalzflexIIIa.jpg

D) 1950's era Walzflex TLR camera that uses 120 film

in a 6x6 format.  Nitto Kogaku Kominar 7.5cm f3.5

taking and viewing lenses.  Copal MXV shutter with

speeds from 1 to 1/500 plus Bulb.  Picture was taken

on HP5 Plus and developed in HC-110.

A) Picture name:  50 squares, attached file JF380705.JPG

B) Information about the Picture. It shows a reflection of the Justice Department building in Montevideo. It has 25 square spaces in front, which added to the reflections make for 50 squares. Taken in Plaza Independencia, Montevideo, after a heavy rain, July 03/2005.  I was walking around mixed with the tourists and was captured by the reflections in a poodle near a lamp. The lamp base, colonial style, is visible in the photo.

C) Picture of the Camera: see attached file JFCX05.JPG

A) 59 cents: gordon_coale-59_cents.jpg

B) I was wracking my brain for a third 50s theme when I was in my local

supermarket at the yogurt section and there it was! I had My Agfa Isolette

II in my pocket and took the picture.

C) gordon_coale-agfa_isolette_ii.jpg

D) Agfa Isolette II. Produced in the early 1950s. It uses 120 roll film

with a 6x6 negative. I recovered the camera with leather and repaired the

bellows with gaffers tape. There will be a new bellows in the future. The

shutter is a Prontor SV with 8 speeds from 1 sec to 1/300 plus B. M and X

flash sync. The lens is an Apotar 85/4.5. Focus is by estimate but keeping

it between f8 and f16 solves any focus problems. Film is Tri-X. Negative

scanned on my Epson Perfection 2450 Photo. A great pocket camera!

Zoe's 52nd birthday: gordon_coale-zoe_s_52nd.jpg

B) My kids and grandkids came over for Zoe's (my wife) 52nd birthday.

C) gordon_coale-brownie_hawkeye.jpg

D) Brownie Hawkeye Flash Model. Produced from 1950 to 1961. It uses 620

roll film with a 6x6 negative. Some of the early ones can use 120 roll

film with the 620 takeup spool. I was lucky. Mine is one of those. Lens is

a double element meniscus. The shutter is a simple spring w/sliding

aperture disc. The shutter speed is around 1/30 plus B. Focus is around 2

meters to infinity. It's a twin lens reflex. Sort of. The flash bulb was a

Sylvania Press 25B. Film is Fuji NPH 400. Negative scanned on my Epson

Perfection 2450 Photo.

A) 1955 Thunderbird: gordon_coale-1955_Thunderbird.jpg

B) This is in the parking lot of out local supermarket. I was carrying the

Flexaret around trying to find something that said 50s. Then this

turquoise Thunderbird pulled in. Freeland, Whidbey Island, Washington.

C) gordon_coale-flexaret_va.jpg

D) Meopta Flexaret Va. Uses 120 roll film in 6x6 format. Made in

Czechoslovakia 1958-61. Taking lens Meopta Belar 80mm f3.5 (it's a

Tessar.) Metax shutter with shutter speeds from 1 second to 1/400 second

plus B. Film is outdated Tri-X given to me by a photographer who has gone

digital. Film processed in Xtol by Panda Lab in Seattle. Negative scanned

on my Epson Perfection 2450 Photo.

A)      Picture Name: ReedGeorgeStars.jpg

B)      I was just clicking through my folders of pics from the Zorki, hoping for a “50s” shot.  This one has 50 stars, I suppose.

C)      Picture of the camera: ReedGeorgeZorki0001.jpg

D)      1955 model Zorki 1 (e?) – Industar 50mm f3.5.  Taken in San Francisco, Kodak Max 400 color film, 1/500 f 16.

) Edsel in the grass

B) Named for a son of Henry Ford, the Edsel was introduced to the public on the eve of an economic recession. The bold styling features did little to help slumping sales, which were discontinued after only three years of production. Less than 6,000 Edsels survive today, with this one a candidate for significant restoration.

C) Minolta A

D) Minolta A 35mm rangefinder s/n 103997. Production of these chubby rangefinders began in 1955, with the very sharp Chiyoko Rokkor 45mm f3.5 lens lasting for the entire five year production run. Shutter speeds, controlled by a knurled knob on top of the camera body are B, 2, 5, 10, 25, 50, 100 and 200. This shot was taken on Kodak Gold 100 print film scanned as a JPEG to a CD at a drug store. I cropped the JPEG image a bit, but otherwise NO color adjustments, level manipulation or sharpening have been performed.

Happy Anniversary Tri-X!

50 years and still the best!

Here's the info:

Camera is an Agfa Ansco Super Memar.  A variation of the Agfa Silette

class of cameras.  This one has a coupled rangefinder and the f3.5 45mm

Apotar lens.  Film is Agfa 200 via Polaroid.  One hour processing.

Window light from a cloudy day.  Sekonic meter.

A) *"Ally Sleeping on Mommy's Legs"        0605-1_Kovacs.jpg

*B) *This is one of those timeless moments capturing the speical bond

between mother and daughter.

*C) *Kovacs_camera.jpg

*D) *Rolleiflex 2.8E Type I c1956 that use 120 film in a 6x6 format,

Schneider Xenotar f/2.8 80mm lens in Synchro Compur shutter with speeds

B,1-1/500. f/ 2.8 to f/22. Photo taken handheld, f/2.8 on Fuji Acros 100

souped in HC-110 dilution B for the recommended time.

The shot was taken just down the road from our house in Amsterdam.

Hand-held with the Moskva 5, around f11 at 1/100s.  Film is Ilford

FP4+ developed for 20 minutes in Rodinal 1+100.

The camera was a $20 purchase from every addicts' favourite haunt.  It is

not in the best cosmetic condition, with self timer tab broken off

(although the self-timer still works) and the double exposure prevention

mechanism removed.  The door catch mechanism is not brilliant either.

However, the lens is spotless and the RF is absolutely spot on.  Camera is

from the late fifties, as far as I know.

Too Many pictures on one page had to add more so the down load to you would not be too slow.
