Without making everybody go buy hundreds of dollars of software the internet has some free solution for photo imaging.

One of my favorites is Picasa2 free from Google

click on this to down load Picasa or to take a tour

This program will go through your hard drives and find all images stored on them in any form. Then they can be easily found and seen. The program will also allow you to print, send emails, make slide shows, make adjustment to individual pictures and more the best part it's "FREE".

Other programs on the internet allow picture sharing. That is you up load them and invite friends and family to view them. I have used them just a little as I use my web sites. One such site is Welcome to Flickr - Photo Sharing

In March of 2006 I bought a "All in one" Printer, Copier and Scanner. This model also will allow you to scan prints, negatives and even slides.

When scanning either film or pictures one of the first things to do is think of the output. Will it be a print if so what size most prints need 300dpi  (dots per inch) to look good. If the scan is to be only viewed on a computer screen 72dpi is good.
This is the scan settings

Resolution:   96 dpi

Document Size:  W  .90   H 1.39 inches

Target Size: same as negative

File Size 2.89 KB

This is the scan settings

Resolution:   300 dpi

Document Size:  W  .90   H 1.39 inches

Target Size: 4x6

File Size 157 KB

This image has been thumb nailed so it can be viewed on this screen.

This setting would give a good 4x6 inch print but would make it very hard to see on a computer screen as it would make it.

4 x300=1200 dpi  6x300=1800dpi

If you divide those numbers by 72 (that is the dpi of your screen) you get a 16.6x25 inch image that is why it looks so large (click on the image to show full size)

This is the scan settings

Resolution:  72 dpi

Document Size:  W  .90   H 1.39 inches

Target Size: 4x6

File Size 18.9KB

Dimensions 287x431 pixels Divide these numbers by 72 and you get 3.986 inches x 5.986 inches

This is also a good email size if only viewed on the monitor screen.

When ever working on an image do not work on the original especially if it was taken digital with your camera save it and give it a different name.
I'll start by using Pasa2 to do some editing.

First I cropped out the bright area of the sky

Just a little fill light to remove some of the shadows.
The last step is to do a little sharpening
