I really like these cameras and it breaks my
heart to see one in such bad shape. When I first got this one it looked like
it was kept on someone's dirty shelf. A simple damp cloth was not going to
work. I used an old tooth brush and Windex to scrub off 50 years of grime
from the outside of the camera. This picture is the aftermath clean but the
finish is gone. Caution must be taken from swamping the inside of the
camera. After the Windex wipe the outside with a damp cloth. Open the camera
and allow it to dry. |

Before going any further in a few spots the
leather had come loose. I have read many different ways of gluing or
cementing the leather down. First do not use a permanent glue ...Barge,
Epoxy, Super Glue the leather needs to be removed to get to screws
underneath. I have used Polybond but prefer wood carpenters glue even
a white or Elmer's glue. It's water soluble, no fumes and is easy to clean up
any over spills. Just peel back the leather I use tooth picks to apply the glue
than use clamps or rubber bands to hold in place till dry. |
|
In my other repairs I have used common supplies
to repair and refurbish my cameras and so here too. Good shoe creams have
all the nutrients that dried out leather require. |

|
I use a brush to apply the "Leather Cream" this
is a nice rich black. Use Q-tips to get into the small spots. |

|
Remember to open the camera to get the covered
parts. |

After the "Leather Cream" has been on for 10-15
minutes take a few paper towels and remove the bulk of "Leather Cream" this
is the messy part. Now take that horse hair shoe brush and give a good
shine. (spit optional) |

The main reason for working on this camera was
the stiff coupled range finder. This not a complicated job the hardest part
is getting the range finder and the focus reset. I also like to clean the
lens of any haze. Four screws hold the face plate on remove in any
order. |

|
|
Very gently remove the face plate. |
_small.JPG) |
|
The parts of the First lens assembly can be
unscrewed and removed for cleaning. The middle lens is cleaned in place.
Using Alcohol clean all the old grease and crud off all the removed parts
and set the lens in a safe place for now. Using Alcohol and Q-tips clean as
much of the gear assembly left on the camera.

Using Alcohol and a syringe flush out the gears,
use a little compressed air to blow any dirt out. |
|
Squirt and rotate |

Simple lubricants I use the NYOIL just because I
have it for shutters. Just remember a little goes a long way. Use a light
grease on the large geared wheel that goes around the lens. |
| |
|
dr_small.JPG) |
I was using a different drawing program and it
saved over my master image. Blue arrows for light oil and the red for the
grease. I also put some grease on the geared ring before putting it over the
lens. |
|
While the Range Rotation mechanism was apart the
inside of the lens had some metal shavings in side and a little cleaning
never hurt. The top ring unscrews but you have to keep the gears fro
turning. |

With the first lens and the front surface on the
center lens cleaned and reinstalled. Face plate reinstalled time to get the
back surface of the center lens and the back lens. Select the "B" shutter
speed and use a rubber band to hold it open. Set the aperture to fully
open. Close the front cover. |
_small.JPG) |
|
Use a spanner wrench to remove the back lens
clean it and set it aside. |
_small.JPG) |
_small.JPG) |
Now you can get to the back surface of the
center lens. |
|
A lot of glare from my lights but the lens is
now clean and every thing is ready to go back together. Screw in
the back lens and this parts done.
Since the whole lens and range assembly has been
taken apart it will have to be reset to infinity and the focus set. Check
AGFA for how to. |
